NJ Stores for Costumer Needs
The following is a list of local shopping for fabric, costume supplies and hardware supplies near the Costume-Con 29 hotel (and a bit further). This is hardly an all-inclusive list and it is primarily aimed at places "near" the CC 29 hotel.
The hotel is located on the edge of one of the largest shopping areas in Northern NJ. It is also near one of the bigger collection of intersections of main highways, making driving “interesting“. One really has to pay attention to traffic!
The area also gets really packed with traffic on a Saturday especially traveling up North Route 17 or East on Route 4. If you need to go in those directions, do it early (before noon)!!!
If you are planning on venturing out, it is suggested to get a good Hagstrom type map of the area (in addition to those with a GPS Navigator). This is a densely built up area with confusing roads. In addition, there are also many ways "to get thar from here" and a good map will help with finding alternate routes.
Bergen County is the home of a vast collection of Shopping Malls and stores both on Route 17 and Route 4 selling more “normal” cloths, shoes and stuff then can possibly be listed here.
WARNING: because of Bergen County Blue Laws, most are closed on Sunday (except for food, the Barnes and Noble book store and convenient stores). For Sunday shopping you will have to head south towards Route 3 (Passaic or Essex Counties) where things are open.
Fabric:
Paramus Fabric Center (not too far from the hotel)
70 North State Rt 17,
Paramus, NJ 07652
(201) 843-7640
Hours: Mon - Thurs: 9:30am - 9:00pm Fri - Sat: 9:30am - 6:00pm Closed Sunday
"Old Time Fabric Store: The people running Paramus Fabric Center are the grandsons of the original owner. The store has been in continuous operation since May 1957!” This is the closest general fabric store to the convention for all your fabric, thread, notions and trim needs. Good variety and prices are reasonable.
Drive North on Route 17. IMPORTANT: Stay on the right as you approach the Route 4 intersection. The store comes up quickly just after you go over Route 4.
You will see signs for carpets, but also look for the Western Boot sign (empty store). It has a narrow driveway and little parking but you can also pull into the boot store parking area.
The current owner has attended SF conventions and played with the SCA so he understands “us”.

This is close to the hotel. It has some "to die for" decorator fabrics including silk and embroidered silk.
Fun to window shop, but the prices are very high. They do have a large selection of trims that are a bit more affordable.
There is a small cut ends table where you might find a small piece of something special at 1/2 price.
Below are stores that I have not checked out personally but are worth exploring someday:

Customer review “I live in NJ and go to Parsons in the city. I've been to this store several times. With all the projects I do for school and for my clients, I've been to almost all the fabric stores in the city. To compare prices, Mood and other fabric stores in the city are way less than Broadway fabrics in NJ. I'd rather take the bus or car into the city than pay double the price at Broadway Fabrics. Another thing about this store is you can't get swatch samples, which is hard at times since my clients request samples of the fabric before designing for them.”

This is a wonderful Computer/TV/Techy Geek store. They sell everything for your computer life as well as parts so you can build your own. Good prices on their own brand flash/thumb drives amongst other things.
Clifton Main Street/Paterson Farmers Market (Stores open on Sunday)
This is a section on the Clifton/Paterson border just off of Route 46 (and near Route 80/Garden State Parkway, Route 19 and Route 20). All the action is either on Main Street (between Piaget Ave and Crooks Ave) or a few blocks East down Crooks Avenue (after the rail crossing on the left hand side Farmers Market/McDonalds).
This area is a mix of storefronts and industrial buildings and is dominated by Corrado’s, a huge store collective that sells food, children’s cloths, wine and stuff. It’s a landmark that has been there forever.
This is a diverse ethnic/family shopping area which is still a bit rough on the edges but keeps on improving every time I go. There are lots of interesting grocery stores (Turkish and Philippines) and small places to eat (Spanish/Portuguese, Turkish, Middle Eastern, and an Egg Diner!). It is a good area for Fabricholics and Foodies.
At the Corner of Piaget Ave and Main Ave there is even one of the original classic White Castles!
There is also a small Farmer’s Market where you can find fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts and some stores selling Middle East shoes, gifts and such. It has a bit "old world" feel and things are open on Sunday.
The fabric stores are a bit more accessible then some of the NYC stores but this is not a fancy mall area!
You will have to be able to do some walking. The Fabric stores are pretty close to each other but you will probably want to drive between them.
While home decorator fabrics dominate, there are fashion fabrics and trims too and prices are good. You will have to do some “guess this fabric type". You can also try negotiating the price for large orders.
Corrado’s Family Affair
1578 Main Avenue
Clifton, NJ 07011
(973) 340-0628

Hours: These vary for each type of “store” but generally open most days during normal hours.
Fabric Mall
1340 Main Ave
Clifton, NJ 07011
973-478 8800
Hours: Mon-Fri 10am - 7pm, Sat 10am-6pm, Sun 10am - 4pm
This is the nicest and they have a good mix of fabrics including some fancy sparkly fashion/costuming (including some silk) as well as home decorator fabrics and interesting trims. They are a bit more expensive the other warehouse styled stores but you can try to negotiate if you are buying a lot. They just moved from an older warehouse building to this store front style place, so it is nice and clean. Parking is challenging and you may need to park down the side street and walk.
The owners are friendly and sweet!
There is a great Turkish grocery store just three store down that’s work a visit.
Fabric Tela Outlet
(973) 546-8300
1500 Main Ave, Clifton, NJ07011
Hours: Mon-Sat 9am - 6pm, Sun 9am - 4pm
This is in a big, multistory red brick building (that used to be owned by Singer). There are several outlet stores in the building including this fabric store. It is a huge warehouse. While predominantly home decorator oriented, they do have a fashion/costume fabrics. They sell some extra wide fabrics and there are some cool trims. There are also “cut off” bins and some decent/cheaper prices. Lots of parking but keep an eye out for the one way street.
Fine Fabric Warehouse
339 E Railway Avenue
Paterson, NJ 07503-1217 map
Phone:(973) 523-0707
Hours: Mon-Sat 9am - 6pm, Sun 9am - 6pm
This is a small, crowded store in the Farmers Market with mostly fashion/clothing fabrics. They also carry some fun trims and buttons and it can be fun to poke around in to see if you find something unusual.
The woman who owns it is very nice.
By the way there is also a great Turkish grocery store right next to the McDonalds that fun to visit.
In the last year a number of new groceries have popped up but this is a favorite.
Not as close but in Northern NJ
Fabric Warehouse Belleville
681 Main St Ste 54
Belleville, NJ 07109
(973) 759-8080
Hours: Mon-Sat 10 am - 6pm, Sun 12am - 5pm
http://www.fabricwarehousedirect.com/
This is in a real old wooden warehouse in a small section of other old warehouses just off of Route 21/Route 3. They have an interesting range of fabrics on rolls and in cut peices. There prices are good normally but they have periodic sales which make tehm great. There are fashion and home decorator fabrics, home decorator trims and often other odd things not sewing related. It is a “guess this fabric” type place. The ladies who work there have been there for years and are nice and helpful.
You get to it from Route 3 and the first exit on Route 21 south. Turn left at the exit ramp, pass a bunch of apartment/condos until you come to the warehouse collective. Turn left at the entrance and look for parking.

This is a great old fashion quilt store. It is in an old wooden barn-like building. They carry a great range of quilting fabrics and some fashion fabrics along with tools, notions trim, books. They teach quilting classes in the basement and they are a Bernina outlet.

This is a nice family run fabric store in the Watchung Plaza shopping area of Montclair. It s near some eateries and even a small Japanese Anime gift store. The store covers all sorts of sewing fabrics while specializing in quilting. Great selection of buttons!
Yet Farther away:
Mc Gowen Mill Fabric Outlet
954 Sherman Avenue,
Elizabeth, NJ 07208-3526

"This store had by far the widest selection of silks of any fabric store that I saw in New Jersey,
including some more widely known stores that were substantially larger in size."
Have not check this one out in several years but this was a well stocked store in an industrial area.
The store had some lovely fabrics for fashion, bridal and home decoration and some craft supplies on the second floor.
